Exclusive interview: New Dance Music Friday with Deepend

Aug 17, 2018

We proudly present the New Dance Music Friday feature, your weekly update on all newly released dance tracks, brought together on one amazing playlist. Featured this week (among many others): Deepend! He's releasing his new single 'Could Be Love' today, and talks about the creation of it in this exclusive interview.

Hey, you are releasing your new single 'Could Be Love‘ today. How did you create this?
"Joe Killington recorded a basic demo of the song and forwarded it to me. I instantly loved the demo and had many ideas for the production. I really liked Joe’s uplifting vocal performance and the catchy lyrics, so my idea was to make a crossover song that could be played in both clubs/festivals and also on the radio. In the end, it took me almost a year to finish the song. I spent a lot of time on the drop finding the right melody in combination with the right sounds. I didn’t want to go fully electronic with the lead sounds, so I added a few layers with subtle vocal chops and sampled instruments to give it a more organic feel."

What does this record say about your musical evolution as an artist?
"'Could Be Love' is a good example of a song that I made based on my touring experiences as a DJ. When I started with music production around eight years ago, I always made music that was easy to listen to on my phone or while I was studying. This was my only reference at that time. After three years of touring, I discovered that I needed higher energy tracks to play in my DJ sets. 'Could Be Love' is definitely a result of this. It’s still a song you can easily listen to, but it also has the right energy to play in front of a crowd."

The track is featured on Spinnin’s New Dance Music Friday playlist. How important is streaming to you?
"Streaming has become very important to me the last years. It’s the new way of listening and discovering music for many people and I think that it will be even bigger in the future. My music turned out to be very suitable for streaming which creates a lot of possibilities for me to reach a bigger audience."
