Exclusive interview Bolier: 'Dance music is heading towards more organic sounds'

Feb 9, 2016

He's one of the trending topics for 2016. Bolier is a famed deep house DJ, recently named by Spotify Benelux as 'artist to watch', and is by now already welcoming over a million Spotify listeners every month. With his new single 'Riverbank' making moves now, high time for an exclusive interview with the Dutchman.

First of all, what have you been up to lately?
"The last few weeks have been pretty much about dragging my ass back and forth between studio and ps4 – setting up a lot of fire to be released later on this year."

You just released 'Riverbank' featuring Mingue on vocals. What can you tell us about this track?
"Riverbank was born after I received a couple of demos by Mingue through my publisher. I really was into all demos, but especially the vocals in 'Riverbank' struck a nerve, so I decided to create a track around that – including the little top melody which was re-recorded later using some real guitars."

What does this record say about your musical evolution as an artist?
"I think this record is bringing my melodic background into a crossover dance track."

If music wasn't your priority, what would you be working on instead?
"Probably my FIFA16 skills."

What has been the coolest thing in your musical career up till now?
Too much to mention, more important is that there’s a lot of cool stuff to look forward to! Though, seeing my name pop up as a worldwide trending topic during a live stream while I was DJing was super cool to see."

What artists/movies/books/art inspires you the most when creating music?
"Electronic music artists like Noisia, Maceo Plex, Stephan Bodzin, Knife Party because of their great sound design, artists like Calvin Harris for their feeling for crossover melodies, hiphop stuff by for example Timbaland because it’s different for someone with a dance music background, and in the end: great music alltogether."

What is the most interesting/funny rumor about you?
"I don't know really, people usually don’t tell rumors to your face."

What do you think is the most interesting development in dance music these days?
"Right now I really like that the dance industry is heading into a more organic and musical direction, output wise."

What are your goals for the future?
"Make as many people as possible listen to my music!"

And finally, what would you advise the upcoming stars on our Talent Pool?
"Don’t spam artist and label channels with your soundcloud links, it works contra productive, really."
