Exclusive interview Florian Picasso: 'Sounds are evolving fast'

Feb 15, 2017

Florian Picasso has just released his brand new single 'This Is Our Time', and it's a gem! Coming with amazing DJ support and a wonderful video, it's an exciting next step in Picasso's ever evolving career. We had a talk with him about his music, inspirations, future plans and rumor around his name..

French/Vietnamese DJ Florian Picasso signed with Spinnin' Records last year. The great-grandson of the world famous artist Pablo Picasso was already making waves for some years, and reached a new milestone with this record deal, kicked off with his single 'Cracked Wall', released December 2nd. Now, he's followed this up with the impressive crossover tune 'This Is Our Time', supported by loads of DJs, destined to go places.

Hey Florian, your new single 'This Is Our Time' was just released. What can you tell us about this track?
"
I worked from a topline written by Afsheen and Josh Cumbee. These guys are so talented, they also wrote on 'Final Call'. We met in LA, they showed me that demo which just had the vocal and a guitar melody, I fell in love with it straight away and it started from there. I used some elements from my previous tracks such as in 'Final Call' for the vocal chops and the synth from the 'Sheitan' breakdown and tried something fresh and new on the drop."

What does this new record say about your musical evolution as an artist?
"I believe in the right mix between a vocal and a cool instrumental. Sometimes people think that a vocal will make a track better which is wrong. The right balance is required to make a good track. But 'This Is Our Time' is different since I believe the vocal makes more than half of the record."

If music wasn't your priority, what would you be working on instead?
"I would be opening a restaurant I guess :) "

What has been the coolest thing in your musical career up till now?
"Coming back to Vietnam and headlining an 80k people show for NYE!"

What artists/movies/books/art inspires you the most when creating music?
"Picasso inspires me in the process of constant creation. The Alchemist from Paulo Coehlo is a great book and is all about seeking and searching for perfection."

What is the most interesting/funny rumor about you?
"That my name is a stage name lol..."

What do you think is the most interesting development in dance music these days?
"The pace that young producers are setting is crazy, sounds are evolving fast and it's a good thing. It pushes the old generation to keep up with the talent of the youth. Look at DJ Snake, The Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix and Flume... over two years they changed the game."

What are your goals for the future?
"Reaching as many people as I can with my music, and living the life I've always wanted to, be successful and write my own legacy."

And finally, what would you advise the upcoming stars on our Talent Pool?
"
Always create, never duplicate."
