Exclusive interview: New Dance Music Friday featuring BLR

May 12, 2017

We proudly present the New Dance Music Friday feature, your weekly update on all newly released dance tracks, brought together on one amazing Spotify playlist. Featured this week (among many others): BLR! He's releasing his new single ‘La Concha’ today, and provides the list with some musical tips, and tells all about it in this exclusive interview.

Hey, you just released your new track ‘La Concha’. How did you create this?
"
Usually my tracks start out with the melody / main hook / whatever you wanna call it but with 'La Concha' - as I produced this straight after I finished 'Nungwi' - I started out with the low end, kick, bassline and groove. After long tweaking I got what I was after and only then I looked in creating the upper layers, the melodies, the analog vibes in the breakdown etc."

What does this record say about your musical evolution as an artist?
"
This record (and for that matter, all BLR records) kind of showcase what I learned over the years when it comes to production techniques, or which techniques I came up with myself sometimes even during the creation of those tracks, combined with a sense for 'keeping the core of the tracks catchy, in a way'. While a lot of people think creating something very complex melody wise, with lots of stuff going on, is the utopia artists need to thrive for, I do think it's the other way around, and is the hardest part for me to achieve - create something that is unique yet is something people can remember after hearing it for the first time. As for the BLR tracks I also keep in mind what would work on a dancefloor / in a DJ set, while when I produce a Bolier track, the version that is finished first would be the radio edit."

The track is featured on Spinnin’s New Dance Music Friday playlist. How important is Spotify to you?
"The one thing I do daily is check the play stats update for my tracks on Spotify, if that says enough. Spotify in a way is a very democratic tool as well, since people can decide for themselves what they like and what they wanna listen to again more often, I am really happy with the fact that streaming services became a major player in music distribution."

Which tracks released this week should definitely be added to New Dance Music Friday?

BLR - 'La Concha'

Bolier & Redondo - 'Untangled'

Chace - 'Something About You'

Sofi Tukker - 'Johny' (Moon Boots remix)

Zhu - 'Intoxicate'
