Exclusive interview: New Dance Music Friday featuring Sophie Francis

May 26, 2017

We proudly present the New Dance Music Friday feature, your weekly update on all newly released dance tracks, brought together on one amazing Spotify playlist. Featured this week (among many others): Sophie Francis! She releases her new single ‘Lovedrunk’ today, and provides the list with some musical tips, and tells all about it in this exclusive interview.

Hey, you just released your new track ‘Lovedrunk’. How did you create this?
"Heeey! I’m very excited about this release. It was made already last year! I couldn’t wait to have it out!! The idea came up during a writing camp that I attended in Amsterdam last November. I had a session with super cool Dutch singer songwriters: Mattanja Joy Bradley, Sophia Ayana, Yuno Verse, Whan… And actually the vocals from the master are the original vocals recorded right there as demo. We did re-record them later on, but the feeling of the original was so on point that I decided to keep them as they were.

'Lovedrunk' was born inspired on a story about being so in love with a person, and not having the total approval from your family, but being so in love that you want it more and more, and nothing else matters.

In the instruments I wanted something with a light reggae vibe… urban, followed by an energetic drop.

We composed the main melodies all together during the camp, with the exception of the drop. It had a different drop originally, and later on, during the production process I wanted to change it, and I wrote some new melodies and produced the one you hear now, together with my friend James Ericsson. James is a great support on the technical side, helping me to improve the sound for now.

I am glad that I finished school this week, and I’ll be able to spend lots of hours in studio to grow and develop further as a producer!!"

What does this record say about your musical evolution as an artist?
"It’s difficult to define that by myself. I love to explore and try new things, so I guess my musical evolution isn’t having a certain direction regarding style, but more into daring to blend many different sounds, cultures and real instruments.

Now that I’ve got more time I’d like to grow as a musician, improving and learning to play different instruments to be able to use them in a near future, mixing digital with analog live during my shows."

The track is featured on Spinnin’s New Dance Music Friday playlist. How important is Spotify to you?
"I think Spotify is one of the most important platforms nowadays for every artist. People don't buy music anymore –or rarely. The way to consume and/or discover your music is with streaming services, as Spotify. Beside that, Spotify has a cool way to share your personal music taste with your followers by creating playlists. It’s a beautiful and amazing music-makers and music-consumers net."
