Exclusive interview: New Dance Music Friday with Janieck

Dec 8, 2017

We proudly present the New Dance Music Friday feature, your weekly update on all newly released dance tracks, brought together on one amazing Spotify playlist. Featured this week (among many others): Janieck! The singer-songwriter is back with a stunning new single, 'Does It Matter', and talks about the creation of the track, his music and current favorite new records in this exclusive interview.

Hey, you just released your new single ‘Does It Matter'. How did you create this?
"I heard the original by Alice Deejay, 'Better Off Alone', since a long time. Listening to the main hook I thought, why doesn’t it have more vocals on it? So I called my childhood music buddy Alon, went to the studio and started working on different layouts. On the first version we started with the main hook on guitar. The second version we started with the lyrics "better off alone", both didn’t work. So I grabbed my guitar, tried different chords and we wrote a verse which resolved into the main hook so perfectly. Then we wrote lyrics to the main hook, recorded the guitar and the main idea was there."

What does this record say about your musical evolution as an artist?
"First of all, a year ago I wouldn’t ever work on an already existing song. For me as a songwriter that was quite not done. Somehow this project changed that and now I’m open to it (from time to time). I thought…. you know what, I love it, and isn’t it all about the music? And rewriting an original song like this one is me paying respects. Secondly, for a year I was thinking maybe I should stop doing the guitar hook driven songs. And now I’ve noticed, that’s my thing, so why not? I just don’t wanna think too much about making music and just do what feels good."

The track is featured on Spinnin’s New Dance Music Friday playlist. How important is Spotify to you?
"Super important, nowadays you can reach the people without being dependent on the radio stations and others. There are so many songs out there that don’t reach the people while they should and with Spotify, they can."
